1. Pack Light but Smart
– Why it matters: Asia’s diverse climate requires versatile packing. Lightweight clothes, layers, and waterproof gear are essential. I love using Mountain Warehouse Isocool tops (https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/035411-endurance-isocool-polo-p29124/dark-grey/) as they are quick drying, moisture wicking and provide some UV Protection.
– Pro tips:
– Use packing cubes to organise your belongings. I have only recently started using these and they are great for organising your travel bag. The only problem is knowing what you have in each one, so I end up unpacking all of them to find what I need!
– Women should probably carry a scarf or shawl for modesty in temples and unpredictable weather. Men should wear long trousers too.
– Bring a reusable water bottle with a filter to stay hydrated safely. Be careful buying water as it may not be filtered.
2. Embrace Local Transport
– Why it matters: Buses, tuk-tuks, trains, and ferries offer an authentic experience and are often the most budget-friendly options. Use https://12go.com/ to plan your travel.
– Pro tips:
– Use ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek in urban areas. But watch out for scams where they park up and wait and you then can’t cancel the ride.
– For long journeys, try overnight trains or buses to save on accommodation. See my blog on our trip to Sapa in Vietnam!
3. Research Local Customs and Etiquette
– Why it matters: Respecting cultural norms enhances your experience and builds rapport with locals.
– Pro tips:
– Learn a few basic phrases in the local language. In Thailand, make sure you use Sawadee Ka for Women and Sawadee Krup for men.
– Always remove shoes before entering temples or homes.
– Be aware of how to dress modestly in certain regions.
4. Explore Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations
– Why it matters: Asia has plenty of hidden gems that are less crowded and offer a unique charm. We loved visiting Koh Kradan and Sunset Beach. Check out my YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/zTAQ99jntoY?si=RW-bn2Z1qiLTlmKw
– Pro tips:
– Opt for places like the southern Philippines, smaller Indonesian islands, or Thailand’s lesser-known provinces. Next year we’re off to Bohol, Panglao, Siquijor and then back to Coron Island. We are then doing the amazing trip with Big Dream Boatman from Coron to El Nido. https://bigdreamboatmancoron.com This should be such fun!
– Use local guides to discover authentic experiences while supporting the community.
5. Stay Connected with Tech
– Why it matters: Reliable connectivity ensures seamless navigation, bookings, and communication.
– Pro tips:
– Get a local SIM card or an eSIM for affordable internet access. I’ve used both Airalo (https://www.airalo.com) and Holafly (https://esim.holafly.com) and they are so easy to install prior to travelling and then Activate when you arrive.
– Use apps like Maps.me for offline navigation and Agoda or Booking.com for accommodations. You can download about 10 maps for free and it works using your GPS, so you can use this even while on a plane to track your journey. No roaming charges apply.
By blending preparation with a sense of adventure, you’ll navigate Asia like a seasoned traveller while creating unforgettable memories!
